Armed with a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and an MFA in Photography from the Yale University School of Art, Genevieve Gaignard creates site-specific installations dominated by slices of Americana and a clear nostalgia of place—both geographically and historically. While her formal training as a photographer shines, Gaignard’s installations evoke the sensibility of an interior decorator with a satirizing ability to create rooms that function as altars to the past as well as testaments to her reality. As a mixed-race, female artist, Gaignard presents clear mediations on contradictory expectations of female beauty while simultaneously mining narratives of passing through her contextually and phenotypically rich characters. As Gaignard works in conversation with her predecessors, notably the self-portraits of Yasumasa Morimura and the mixed-media sculptures of Betye Saar, she keenly expands the dialogue—taking into account the lived experience of a contemporary woman. With smart incorporations of “selfie” culture, Gaignard presents a profound feeling of looking at oneself through the eyes of others in a seamless nod to du Bois’ notion of double-consciousness. Genevieve Gaignard lives and works in Los Angeles.
