Douglas Brown and musical guest, Mason Summit Hosted by Linda Albertano Join us for a reading and celebration of our two Los Angeles Poet Laureates and special guests Ashaki Jackson and F. Douglas Brown Luis J. Rodriguez is the Poet Laureate of Los Angeles, chosen by Mayor Eric Garcetti in 2014. His last poetry book, “My Nature is Hunger,” won the 2005 Paterson Book Award. The 1993 memoir “Always Running, La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A.,” with close to half a million copies sold, became one of L.A.’s most checked out in libraries—and one of the most stolen. He has a dozen other books in poetry, children’s literature, fiction, and nonfiction. He is also founding editor of the small press, Tia Chucha Press, now in its 25th year, and co-founder of Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore in the San Fernando Valley. His latest book is “It Calls You Back: An Odyssey Through Love, Addiction, Revolutions, and Healing,” a finalist for the 2012 National Book Critics Circle Award. Amanda Gorman, 16, from Westchester, CA is a student at New Roads High School and has participated in writing programs at WriteGirl and Beyond Baroque. She has been a youth delegate to the United Nations, and founded her own organization, One Pen One Page, aimed at providing writing workshops and mentorship to suffering schools nationally and abroad. In June, 2014 she was appointed as the first-ever Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate. Hosted by Linda Albertano. Musical interludes by singer-songwriter Mason Summit.
