The Venice Garden & Home Tour is an annual fundraiser benefiting the children of the Neighborhood Youth Association (NYA) in Venice, CA. This self-guided walking tour showcases the unique homes and gardens of the creative Venice Beach community. We train our eye on different nooks and enclaves in the neighborhood each year, so no tour is ever the same. The 2014 tour will focus on the secluded, charming Walk Streets east of Abbot Kinney Boulevard and the beach Walk Street neighborhood adjacent to the colorfully chaotic Venice boardwalk.

Free on-street parking is available. Free shuttle vans are also available along the route.

This Year’s Tour: Iconic Venice Walk Streets

The 2014 Venice Garden and Home Tour features 30 gardens and homes in the secluded, charming Walk Streets east of Abbot Kinney Boulevard and the beach Walk Street neighborhood adjacent to the colorfully chaotic Venice boardwalk. Fantasy is alive and well in Venice, and Abbot Kinney’s 1904 vision of a Venice-of-America, a Coney Island at the Pacific Ocean resonates today.

The inland Walk Streets half a mile east of the ocean are quiet, peaceful oases in the midst of the congested city where homes face each other across the paths. Restored bungalows sit next to contemporary designs, roses bloom near spare, drought tolerant pocket gardens, dogs bark back and forth, cats slip in and out of fences, and neighbors quietly chat in gardens over morning coffee. Tour-goes will see the startling transformation of a 1920s bungalow into a California Modern with a spacious vegetable garden. There is also an architect’s three-story light-filled solution to creating a comfortable family home with only a 600 square foot imprint. There are updated Craftsman and beach cottages whose homeowners respect the past, along with slick new homes designed by acclaimed local architects.

The Ocean Front Walk Streets, where Abbot Kinney once lived, are steps from the gritty, gorgeous playground by the sea that is Venice Beach. Among the many intriguing homes is a large corrugated steel barn-like building designed by Arata Isoaki and once owned by Eric Clapton. Another fascinating home evokes a custom art deco yacht and features a stunning loft with a second-story lap pool.

The tour includes the work by innovative architects Tom Carson, Rios Clementi Hale, Koenig Eisenberg, Frederick Fisher & Partners, Arata Isoaki and Doug Pierson; designers Youn Choi and Jae Omar; plus landscape designers Jay Griffith, Rios Clementi Hale and Di Zock. The studios of Sandy Bleifer, Jean Edelstein, Helen K. Garber and The Garlow Studio will be open and are representative of the creative work generated in this mecca of art and creativity.
